Hi,

I would like to beef up my dust collection.

What would you recommend.

Currently I am using a 5hp shopvac for dust collection, with PCV tubing running to all my equipment. It works well but is very loud in my small shop.

Are dust collection units quieter than a vacume? (I also heard these need to be grouned if hooked up to PVC) (What would happen other than a static shock?)

The other thing I am looking to get is a air cleaner.

Any suggestions or advice would be very helpful.

Thanks,
Elliott

G'Day Elliot,
I have 4" water pipe going to my equipment then to make more room in my shed, I cut a hole in the shed wall and run the pipe outside, I built what looks like a outhouse to put my 2hp dust collector in it. I lined it with Foam from equipment packaging and broccoli boxes lids, this made it quite acceptable hearing wise also the very fine dust the get through the filter bag is outside. I also have a 1/3 hp air filter which pick up all the dust you cant see.
Hope this helps tried to send a photo of the outhouse but cant upload it sorry.
Cheers,
Bob.

Success at last,
Like they say a picture is worth a thousand words.
There is two layers of broccoli lids. The arrow was how I switch on machine until I had the switch bypassed and now have a switch on the wall (hard wired) next to the lathe
Cheers,
Bob.

Bob,
Your "outhouse" looks like mine... I did the same thing when I built my shop in 2005... I put a closet outside the shop with a hose through the wall to the DC... I should have planned a little better and allowed some space in there for a compressor (for when I get one) because they are loud too.
