I have a hood that I bought from PSI that hooks to my shop vac. I turn in my garage a two car garage. Would this work ok for dust collecting. My guess is something is better than nothing until I can afford a dust collection system to put by my lathe.
Thanks,

I used my shop vac as dust collection for a while. It works, somewhat. The suction and, therefore, dust clearing ability, will always be less than that of a good dust collection system and the filter will get clogged very quickly making it even less effective.

Being a big cheapo, I ended up buying a 2hp dust collector and 1 micron canister conversion kit for both my garage shop and Cathy's dad's shop (where most pens are made). This greatly reduces dust escaping into the air. To get the little bit that might be missed, I threw together a simple air cleaner using a box fan, it's cardboard box, a couple of air filters, and duct tape.

brent, something is definitely better than nothing. one thing you can do is put some panty hose around your filter in your vac and it won't clog as much. also, i think hank lee posted recently about dust collection and had a link to a simple plan for building a 'silencer' around your vac to make it at least bearable to run while turning. i plan to build one similar once i get my shop up and going again.

A shop vac is OK for dust collection, but it is very loud. I used mine for a while. I suggest using a drywall bag inside. It doesn't clog as quickly.
I finally broke down and build a good collector out of some scrap wood, a furnace fan a few bit and pieces. Works great and it is quiet. You can see info on my collector on the workshop pages of my site.
