dumb beginner question about earth casts

Did my first castings today-I followed grub32's video advice. 4 batches later, I'd like to do one of the "earth cast" castings. My novice type question: it appears that you are mixing two separate batches of resin, then mixing them? Is this correct? Do you let the blue start to jell then add the brown?

Thanks,

earth casts are part wood and part resin. The wood is usually very worm infested (although I think someone makes them with drilled out wood). They also have to ve cast with either pressure or vaccum in order to get the resin to fill all the voids.

Just to make things clear...the tutorial linked above is the tutorial I wrote about casting "Worthless Wood". Earth Cast is a proprietary name for blanks cast by Karl K that is based on my original idea with some modifications of his own. The term Earth Cast was coined by Karl and IMO, should be reserved for blanks cast by him. Just like El Mostro's Amalgam Mutt blanks. The term "Amalgam Mutt" was coined by El Mostro to describe his versions of blanks based on my original tutorial.

Keith,

NO harm, no foul, man! My post was certainly not intended to sound hostile or anything. I just though it would be a good time to clarify where the terms came from!

My bad for using a proprietary term in my post too-proper term and what I am looking for is casting worthless wood-I've turned several worthless pens, and turned a she-oak that is already on the tube with a LOT of voids. I have the pressure pot and will attempt to get the fittings from one of the large hardware stores this weekend.

I think that you can "call" your blanks what ever you want. For instance I think that the end customer would find earth cast is much more appealing that worthless wood. That being said I also strongly agree that if you plan on selling your blanks on this site or anywhere else that you should come up with your own name for your creation. I am almost sure that the people here have not registered their cast names with the copyright office but as honest, respectable people we should recognizes and respect there ingenuity, creativity and ground breaking (as far as know) efforts. Marty, I would not worry too much as you were asking a question about making the blanks and really had no knowledge how they were done and not knowing what else to call them I feel that your topic line and your question were appropriate IMHO. Please continue to ask question and answer them this is how we all learn.
God Bless,
Eric

I agree with Eric----I would never call any of my work--"Worthless" but if I want to call them Earthblanks---Last time I checked it's still a free country.

:D

Thanks Curtis for bringing this up, as it's a bit of a weird subject, and somewhat uncomfortable at times when it's your own stuff that's in question. We have a lot of members who have taken the time to come up with unique names and designs, and I think that's a big help in furthering our 'hobby' and building it into a recognizable and viable industry.

The copyright issue has come up in the past with other members' offerings and creations, and it's always a little touchy. It isn't realistic to copyright every name that I come up with at this point because I can't afford it, I don't have time to fill out the paperwork, and the cost involved in enforcing patents and registered names is waaaaay out of my league for a while.

I haven't been sure how to address this issue with regards to my own work, and the associated names that I come up with for my products. I do consider my names proprietary, as well as my designs, as there's a good bit of thought and effort that I put into creating and marketing them. Since this business is my sole source of income, I'm fairly protective of my processes and products. Marketing/branding is a big part of building a successful business, and there's just as much work involved in the 'fluffy' stuff as there is in making sawdust.

I appreciate and agree with Eric's statements, and I think most people feel the same way. Our community sorta polices itself, and that's really comforting. I know there are several members who won't post their work here for fear of it being plagiarized, and their apprehension, while disappointing, is also valid.

The only time I'm ever going to really take issue is if someone sets up right next to me and starts competitively selling against me using 'my' names or designs. Curtis, Eugene and myself have actually talked about this at length. We're all capable of duplicating each other's work, but we don't. There's a couple of major reasons for this - (A) We respect each other and value the friendship that we have which enables us to 'talk shop' about any ideas or problems we have, and (B) There's just so much cool crap out there to dunk in resin that there's NEVER a reason to step on each other's toes.

As far as using "Earth Cast", don't sweat it Rancho! No harm no foul. You were just asking an innocent question. :)

Gary, as for being a free country, no one can stop you from being rude or shady, but is it good business? I think not, at least for me, and I know you aren't the type to set up camp next to me and start using the same names that I've come up with, either.

I'm not terribly attached to the "Earth Cast" name. It's not nearly as creative as some of the stuff that I come up with, but it's what I picked, and it's become associated with my products, and I'm proud of that. I don't know about the rest of you, but for me it's a rush to create something out of thin air and see it become a popular thing.

Names are just names. It's when you associate them with good products that they start to take on a life of their own. Off the top of my head, I can think of a half dozen other things I could've called my "Earth Cast" blanks -

"Carto Blocks"
"Global Visions"
"Terra Forms"
"Mapwood"
"Planetary Expressions"
"Resin Worlds"

The list goes on...feel free to use those all you want. If I need more, all I have to do is drag out my thesaurus and come up with something useable.

If you want creative input, I'm more than happy to help. Shoot, come on over, I'll fire up the grill, make us a couple of Big Macs and we can sip on some of my fresh squeezed Country Time while we ponder. :D[:p]

"no one can stop you from being rude or shady"
And no one can stop you from calling me names either----unless a Mod reads this post and figures that you have just made this personal by attacking me.

Sorry, calling you names was the farthest thing from my mind. I shouldn't have said 'you', I should have said 'a person'. I apologize for that, really. I don't want to fight, I was making a point, and the only reason that I used your name there was because I was referencing your 'free country' statement.

All the Mods know that I'm not into attacking people, and I really am sorry that I made you feel that way. Again, that was definitely not my intention.

Did the rest of the post sound reasonable, at least? Attacking anyone would be a direct contradiction to Eric's sentiments (which I agreed with) about honest, respectable, etc. :)

This is not directed at anyone special.
Using anothers name is okay if you are giving the person credit for it. This may be a free country, but if you walk around misrepresnting your work to capitalize off of someone elses labor, you are only free in your mind. This thread was started by someone using the name as a description of a blank type. It was answered that way and was looked at by a moderator who nicely explained the name to someone new. The arguing doesn't have to happen on every thread, does it? This is why I choose to turn more than type. That is freedom.

Just a quick question, how do us new guys know who owns what names? I don't want to step on any toes, but I've only been here a few months. Just honest curiousity, not starting anything.:D

Actually, Curtis came up with a really good idea for that very thing, but I'm not sure how far he's gotten with it. I know he's really busy.

Right now though, there's really no way I know of see a list or anything. It does make it pretty tough, since some of the names and designs haven't been seen a lot lately. Wish I had a better answer for you. I've been trying to include any of my names in my SOYP subject lines, but I forget half the time, and there's still no good way to look at those, I guess.

I've already told Johnnie about this, but I should go on public record right now with dibs on "Diarrhea Surprise", so hands off of that gem! heh :D[xx(]

It's nice to see a discussion on a sensitive subject without it turning into a flame war.

Here's a thought on the names coined by people.

If you name something, and DON'T want it copied, put a (tm) after
it. If you refer to someone else's name and they've (tm)'d it,
add it. Yes, I know you'll forget often. But it'll be there often
and provide guidance to newbies.

Personally, I'd seen several discussions on earth casts with no objections and didn't know there would be. But then
1) I'm a newbie here
2) I'm a lot less sensitive on the subject than some others

I wouldn't step on someone else's toes intentionally, but
some signposts would help avoid accidents.

had the same thought after reading Curtis' response (22nd)...thought, "that's why he gets to wear the Moderator nametag".

Actual DISCUSSION about a topic, sans rants! Thanks guys!

I'll give it a go.

For 'worthless wood'-type casting (whatever the heck you want to call it), I don't let the resin start to set up before I pour it into the mold. My thinking is that I want it to be as thin as possible so that it gets into as many little cracks and holes in the wood as it can.
