I would like to share an experience with you all about drinking
and driving.

As you well know some of us have been known to have had rare
brushes with the authorities on our way home from the odd
social session over the years.

A couple of nights ago I was out for a few drinks, with some
friends and had a few too many beers and some shots.

Knowing full well I may have been slightly over the limit I did
something I've never done before???? I took a bus home.

Sure enough, I passed a DUI checkpoint, but because it was a bus,
they just waved it through.

I arrived home safely without incident, which was a real surprise,
as I have never driven a bus before and am not sure where I got it!

2 things.

A) I was almost killed by a drunk driver while in college. That crap is NO fun. Don't do it, period.

B) Flying checkpoints is a 4th amendment violation. They need reasonable suspicion to pull you over. However, in Michigan Dept. of State Police v. Sitz (1990) SCOTUS ruled that yes it is indeed unconstitutional but in the interest of public health/safety they can do them. Some states rule that it is a violation of state constitution.

So far to date there is no credible proof showing that flying checkpoints is a deterrent, the same number of accidents and death occurs with or without them

Drinking and driving humor is lost on me.

Last Wednesday, a drunk driver crossed over the line and hit my family head on. I'm still pretty banged up and my wife needed surgery for an open ankle fracture. She also has three broken ribs and a broken toe. She'll not likely be back home until Christmas. Our toddlers in the back seat were bruised pretty good and miss their mom.

Several years ago, a drunk was driving down the wrong side of the interstate and hit my car head on, resulting in a broken back that required surgery and still causes me pain.

Drunk driving should never be a punchline. It simply isn't funny.
