Actually, I make all my pens at the office now---I don't have a drill press there, so everything is done on the lathe or a bandsaw or it can't be done.

(Has motivated me to find some unique ways to do things)

Ed, I guess that you do not value your DP? No sacrificial "wood board" to prevent drill through? Personally I don't like a "holey bed" although I am Catholic.lol
 
The table of my drill press is a piece of corian. I have LOTS of pieces of corian (there is a cabinet shop nearby). When drilling deep holes, I do have a couple pieces of wood that are 2" thick, 8" x 8"--I use those to lift my drilled piece rather than adjust the table height.
