In our never ending search for the "Best Drill" I have a question.
What does Silver & Deming mean besides the fact they get big bucks for the drill ???????
Thanks

It is the name of a manufacturer, but commonly refers to a bit that has a shaft that is smaller than the cutting portion of the bit.

For example, a 5/8" drill bit with a 1/2" shank so it will fit into a 1/2" drill chuck.

GAry, origanilly it was the name of a company that made all sorts of tools, they started making large size twist drills with smaller shanks, now any large drill with a shank that is 1/2 in or 3/8ths is called a Silver & Deming Drill bit.

Is there really such a thing as a 37/64th's drill that cost over a $100.00. The tag says it's HHS.

Yes there are expensive tools out there. In my trade we can get OSG brand drills with special coatings,
through oil holes for cutting edge lubrication, and they are made from
powdered metal, and other different base material.
I have seen twist drills that have 3-5 hundred dollar price tags.

Go to Enco, useenco.com and look around. I buy their Silver and Deming Import drills in cobalt (a type of HSS) for our shop, and have been pleased with the quality and price. I'm guessing 20 bucks for your 37/64.

Yep; Some time ago I was looking for a better set of drill bits. I considered Norseman, but settled on a 115 piece set of Chicago & Latrobe. Set me back about $230, but well worth the price! The Norseman were about $425

From the responces looks like I did good. I bought two Silver and Deming bits new in their cases for $17.00 at the show last weekend. They where both priced in the $100.00 range each. One is 35/64ths and the other 37/64, now I can drill a couple of the blanks I have and get these kits built.
Thanks for the help.
