what does a 17" swing mean?

as in the following specs:

Swing: 17"
Spindle travel: 4-3/4"
Number of speeds: 12
Drill chuck: 5/8"

any help please :question:

I believe the swing is the distance from the chuck to the rear support bar that holds the motor, it connects the base to the top.

~Spindle travel means that is the distance that your chuck can drill downwards
~Number of speeds is obvious
~Drill chuck is capable of chucking material up to 5/8"

well i guess it would depend on what you are comparing it to! LOL , my little benchtop DP is a third that size, so that is big to me! Be sure you shop around if you haven't already. There may be other good deals out there! With the economy and all, companies may give out coupons or discounts or even price match! It cant hurt to ask right?!

The reply is correct. "Swing" is the radius of the largest circle that you could drill the center of, or the longest piece that will fit from the center of the chuck to the column that supports the drill press.

Quill travel is more important in making pens. I bought a drill press specifically for a 6" quill.

I always thought that 'swing' referred to lathes and the corresponding term for drill presses was 'throat'.
17'' is huge to me too. My little toy is only about 6 inch. :redface:

LOL, I just had a thought!! My drill press has had 'swing' now and then.....but only when I didn't clamp down my workpiece:tongue:

From Wikipedia....Swing is defined as twice the throat distance, which is the distance from the center of the spindle to the closest edge of the pillar. For example, a 16-inch (410 mm) drill press will have an 8-inch (200 mm) throat distance.

Swing is twice the distance of the throat which is the distance from the center of the chuck to the post.
