not sure if this is the correct place to ask?

what suggestions do you have for a new drill press?

i currently have a bench size delta VS which works well but its a major pain to have to keep moving the table up and down all the time ;(

trying to reach back to unlock it and then to get to the handle to crank it up or down is getting real old. i hope there is a better way of doing this on a full size unit?

If you have the gear style crank adjustment then I think you have the best of the best.As far as I know this is the best method I have seen I have a old craftsman(that works great),but it is just a slip fit table I have to hold it them swing it back and forth to get it to creep up(but it drops down easy, lol).I have to keep it well lubed or its nearly impossible to get it to move up without hurtinh your back.Good luck,Victor

Look for a drill press that has about 4"+ of quill (up and down) travel, a wide selection of speeds 12-16, geared raising table, a good size solid column (heavy walled pipe) a number 2 Morse taper and a reasonable sized base. If you want you could look for a reversing feature, if it was required (used for thread tapping), I wish mine had it. Some of the new drill presses out now have a variable speed which makes changing speeds a lot easier.

I have the same problem - having to move the table up and down. I just keep a few pieces of plywood in various thicknesses on hand. I have my V clamp on a piece of plywood and if the bit doesn't drill all the way through, I'll turn it off, raise the vise assembly, stick a piece of plywood underneath and then continue drilling.

Some of the floor models have a crank to raise and lower the table, plus another 3 or 4 bar lever that controls the quill travel... a floor model also has a 3-4 inch travel in the quill... unlike my HF table top that only has about 2".... my ambition is to get a good floor model in the future, but not sure when.

using plywood to raise up my vice might just work for now! great suggestion.

i will be keeping my eye out on craigslist to find a floor model DP.

thanks all for the input
