Been a little behind in technology and do not own an I pad or tablet but do have an I phone which I use about 10% of its capabilities. I can get on line with it, make and receive calls, and after a year can now text. When away from the house I like to keep up with my site and of course the IAP and can do that on the phone but my old eyes on that small screen puts limits on me (Yes I know the two finger bit, but that only will make larger a small portion) .
So if I was to buy a I-Pad or Tablet which one should I but. It needs to be able to take photos, use the internet via wireless or 3 or 4 G and not break the bank.

Roy there are some really good tablets out there right now - of course they are on the Android or Windows platform. Since you are already on an iPhone I would probably go with an iPad - the new mini may be big enough for you.

Apple I-pad despite the fact that it is 'costlier' than other tablets. Perfect to hold
and very easy for my tired eyes. Love it.

If you like the iPhone you will like the iPad and vice verse. The software is exactly the same.

One nice feature is that all of your contacts, calendar an photos can easily sync wirelessly.

Not sure about the new iPads, but their camera has never been a string suit before. It's quite awkward holding an iPad as a camera anyway.

As mentioned with the sync, snap the photo with your phone and it will pop up on your iPad (once set up).

One advantage of the iPad with iPhone is that you can sync everything on one device to the cloud (iCloud, of course) and have it magically appear on the same app on the other device. So, only need to enter contacts once; take a photo with one and it will be available on the other, enter an appointment in the Calendar app on one and it syncs to the other, etc.

(Sorry, Dan, we must have been typing together - synced? ; >) )

I personally have not needed a tablet to date, but every one else in my family has one. Each family get-together leads to a discussion of tablets. While they all tried various makes and models, they all have iPads now. They have more apps available, and more interesting ones as well. Some have noted that the apps you pay for (generally 99 cents to two bucks) oftentimes work better than the free ones. They start with a free one, then if they find the feature useful, they then purchase one for the improved performance, added features etc.

Dan mentioned using the iPad as a camera. It is a bit bulky, so taking the first few shots takes some getting used to. However, my mother has not used her camera since getting the iPad mini. She says its great because the screen is a giant view-finder. Plus, all of her photos are stored and ready to show others.

I hope this helps.

I know everyone is pushing the IPAD but I have a Motorola Xoom (Android) and love it. And, is is quite a bit less $$ than the Ipad. If you're really into apps, Apple has more but Android has plenty for me. One thing -- go with the 10" screen -- you eyes won't get any better. The larger screen sure is nice.

Being an old technophobe like me, I suggest a Kindle Fire HD.
Can't do Windows programs like Word or Excel but does get internet and email. I love mine. But I virtually live in hotels and it's not as naff as having a big laptop in the bar.
I use mine a lot for reading ebooks too.

Interestingly I discovered a cool thing about it's WiFi capabilities.
I live in a 3 storey house and I have a wireless router on the lowest floor.
My laptop and the rest of the family's laptops / iPads etc can only get the signal upto the middle floor.
I can still surf the web and chat to my IAP buddies while laying in bed on the top floor !! ( not much else to do there these days anyway  )

As has been mentioned before, if you like the iPhone, go with the iPad. Just about everything sincs automatically, and going from one to the other is easy as pie. Even the apps you get for one, will be available on the other for no extra. Since you're concerned about your eyes, I'd stick with the full sized iPad. No need in getting a mini, and finding out you need a bigger screen in short order.

How much do you read? How is your eyesight? My husband and I are readers...don't watch much tv, but polish off several books a week. We both have Kindle Fires and do all our reading on the kindles. They are backlit so you can read in bed or in a dark car, or in a poorly lighted waiting room. You can make the print as big as you need it. You can carry around dozens of books in one small package. They can access the internet through any wifi hotspot. They play movies and tv shows through Amazon or Hulu or Netflix.

They are cheap!

Definitely the IPAD, especially if you already have the IPhone. The camera on the new one is much better(5MP). The one annoying thing that nobody here will address or answer my question is the fact that you can only download 1 photo directly from an IPAD. I'm guessing it's an Apple thing, but I can't seem to get a response.

I'm trying to figure out exactly what you mean. I use my iPad (almost) exclusively. Download one photo from where? One at a time? :confused.

When you download directly from your computer by clicking the paperclip icon, I can only download 1 pic. If I try multiple pics at one time, only the 1st pic downloads. If I try adding another pic after the first pic downloaded, it simply replaces it. If you can find a way to do this, I sure would love to know how. Using my computer, it works fine.

I am able to download multiple pics from a 3rd party site, but prefer not to do it this way.

My wife and I have almost completely gone over to apple. We both have iPhone5, she has the iPad I have the ipad min. I prefer the mini as it easier for me to carry not have a big hand bag like her. Earlier this month I bought a iMac desktop, She declined like her old Windows box just fine. I am slowing moving files and pictures over to the iMac and will attend some training when we return from our current road trip. Like was said before with all 3 now synced every thing is good pictures, music and some files. I bought the Mac version of MS Office and now I can transfer my Word and Excell files over. The nice about Apple you can go in to the Apple store for help or training and buying a phone tablet or computer at the store is an experience. I download books and am able to read them with no problem on the iPad mini and I am 71 years old and wear glasses. I have had now problems with the iMac with the set up or the internet. I did get Google Chrome instead of using Safari. Another nice thing your Email is all there with out the adds and having to sign in every time. Never thought I would switch but I am a happy camper.

That is my big problem with apple, too. There is just so darn much out there that uses flash, that simply won't come up on apple products.

I have a 10" tablet
5 or 6 laptops (windows and some linux)
couple desktops
acer netbook

I work with computers 7 days a week. I have some things that just need to be done on a desktop but otherwise I use the netbook.

I had avoided getting a netbook because of the size. Now I wish I had done it much sooner.

I suggest taking a look at one. First off they are a real computer. 120 gig hard drive running 1 gig of RAM. Several USB ports. Built in wireless. Built in camera (not my thing but I have used it for video conferences) I run all my windows applications with no problems. Closed, it's smaller than my tablet. Lightweight as well. I'm still getting 2 1/2 hours on a full charge watching netflix.

I have a external DVD and Floppy drives. I had them for other reasons but work perfect on the netbook. 99% of the time I use Thumb drives to move large files around or install programs.

Less cost for so much more.

Just another option

I traded my lap top for a Google Nexus 7" tablet and love it. Even though I have an Iphone5, the Nexus is an Android platform but an easy transition. I can get many videos that my wife cannot on her ipad. There are also limits to the Nexus, too.
If you are used to the ipad, but the ipad is too much, look into the Amazon Kindle 3 Reader for about $125.00 on ebay. My daughter just got one and loves it, it too is an Android based tablet.

I would go with what everyone else said about getting the iPad, except you said you didn't want to break the bank. You'll pretty much do that with an iPad.

You don't NEED to stay with Apple if you want to sync stuff, it will just do it easier.

As has been mentioned, the kindle fire is nice.

I personally have an ASUS Transformer. I love it. Hardly ever use my desktop anymore. The Transformer can use micros sd cards for moving stuff around.
You can purchase at an additional cost, a keyboard that turns the tablet into an android netbook. You get WAY more hours out of this then a netbook. The tablet will run about 10 hours on a charge, watching videos and stuff. The keyboard adds an additional 5 or 6 hours because it also has a battery in it. The keyboard also has a USB port and an additional microSD slot.
Adding the keyboard will put things on a par with the iPad, cost wise.

If I could do it over again, I would probably go with the Kindle Fire. (Even though I love my transformer)

I've had both tablets and iPads. By far, my favorite is the Ipad, as it better meets all my needs.

As someone already pointed out, one GREAT advantage of Ipad is that it updates your stuff across all Apple products. For example, all your contacts go across Mac, iPhone and Ipad. You can put some in on each devise they ALL show up on every devise. GREAT when traveling, and working across platforms.

As far as buying one with cell capability, I WOULDN'T waste the money. We approach this differently. If we are in a zone where Att works and Verizon doesn't, we get Internet by tethering to one of the IPhones. Additionally, we have a Verizon hot spot to use where Att doesn't work.

Most of the time we use free wifi (available almost everywhere). By using wifi, we found that we are not "chained to a contract" as technology changes. We don't have to upgrade pads, tablets, etc. The hot spot provides upgrades our firmware or sends us a new devise.

Additionally, by using the hot spots it runs laptops, GPS and Verifonr credit card machines without having to buy service for each devise.

By eliminating the credit card gateway fees, we actually SAVE money doing it this way.

My only issue with an iPad is that it cannot play videos using Adobe Flash. Anyone know of an app that will allow them to play?

There is an abundance of free ones at the App Store. I didn't like any of them. I found Fast Player there for.99. It works as well or better than Adobe WITHOUT all of the constant Adobe "updates" that actually mine your data.

Another REALLY COOL app for iPad is onlive desktop. It gives you FULL MS Office 2010 AND Adobe Flash for free.

For $4.99 per month, you get 2 gigs of cloud for your docs and software.

For $ 9.99 per month ($20 a month cheaper than Intuit), you can upload your own software (in our case, Quickbooks Pro) and enter you sales at a show, IN REAL TIME.

No Office 365 or Quickbooks Mobile here- but instead the real Magilla.
