Django Reinhardt (1910-1953) was a jazz genius of the first order - one of my heroes.
This is the base of a commissioned lamp. I'm designing the shade - will probably stick-weld the wire frame, and hoping to include some pen and ink imagery on my handmade paper to project some of the power and mystery of his eternally great music.
Steps:
(Got a series of Django's "Nuages" recordings going in my headphones)
Wheel-threw the form with cone 10 Black Mountain clay.
Then let the clay harden slightly under loose cover for 48 hours.
Next coated the slowly-turning form with a thin slip of home made cone 10 porcelain (clay recipe modified from a 60+ year old issue of Ceramics Monthly).
Let the piece harden slightly under loose cover for another 48 hours.
Gently flattened the front of the form with a grout float to make the "canvas".
Then scratched (i.e. sgraffito'ed) the portrait through the porcelain back to the darker clay body, using a toothpick, some handmade tools & steel wool.
Air dried the piece in a warm room for 1 week.
Bisque fired it at cone 6.
Final fired it in a gas kiln at cone 10:
