Our cable company got in a fight with turner broadcasting. Turner cut off all of their channels. Since we watch quite a bit of stuff on turner channels it is time to migrate to another source.

Our only two options are Dish and Direct TV. We don't do premium channels so that is not an issue?

Any opinions on service, set up, down time due to atmosphere stuff, and whatever else you feel is important will help greatly.

We had direct TV before we moved here. Never had a problem with them but keeping my options open.

Have had Direct for years, very little problems. I would think both would have about the same atmospheric problems as both dished are about the same size.
 
We have been very happy with DirectTv ... Yes we have lost the signal a couple of times (heavy rain) but for the most part it has been trouble free for 2 years. Now they offer an even better DVR capable of recording 5 shows at a time.
I can't comment on Dish as I have no firsthand experience.
 
We've had Dish for several years. Haven't had any issues with them at all. I ave the 250 option with lifetime HD.

You would think their websites would be user friendly. I just gave myself a headache trying to figure what it is all about.
 
We have had Dish for at least 3 years with no problems. When I did need customer service, I got someone on the phone quickly and he got the issue resolved in just a few minutes. Very happy so far...

I've has DirecTV for the past 7+ years with very few problems. I opted for their service/protection plan and the few times I've have had a problem, it's been solved quickly.
 
We have direct tv for 10 years now. Had Dish but got rid of them in 1 day because they lied about the service we were getting. Had Comcast before that but they prices were off the roof. I think direct-tv raise out rate once for additional 1.50/month.
 
What ever you get, put NeverWet on the dish, no worries when it snows.
We have dish for 4 years, no problems.

Had Cox Cable for many years. I stopped at Costco one day and found I could save ~$500 over 2 years with Direct TV.

Have only had one problem with losing signal - heavy rain in Phoenix go figure.

I am happy with the service and picture quality.

I went Direct TV because Dish had an issue with Comedy Central and I watch several shows on that channel.

I will check COX for deals when my contract with Direct TV is up.

Maybe will be able to get what I want off the internet by then.
 
DirectTv here (very heavy raid did lose signal but that is expected no matter who you use)

Service has been outstanding so far. I had a problem, called them up and they had a tech at my door first thing the next day. While aligning the dish he went to truck and brought me all new gear for inside.

Sign up with someone and save $10 a month (they will also get $10 off a month) You must have their account number before you call and setup a date for the install.
 
Dish was the first dish I had in Canada and it was great. Now I have a Canadian net work, wish I had never gave up my Dish net work . We are so regulated here in Canada it's not funny. Just to watch good Net Flix you have to make your computer act like its in the US. Go figure.

I've had Direct for over 10 years and wouldn't switch to anything else. They offer great packages and very rarely raise rates and when they do it's very minimal (like 50 cents more per additional receiver over 2).

They have the a lot of sports packages which I love and have integrated there system so you can access it over any of your mobile devices or computers.

They offer the new Genie receiver which allows you to have picture in picture on your TV's and also record 4 shows while watching a 5th if you tend to record a lot.

Also as stated Akula you can give them the account number of a friend or relative and get $100 off of each of your bills ($10 per month). If you need an account # I will give you mine so we can both save :biggrin:.
 
I've had both and I think DirecTV is a lot better. I had dish for about 3 years and had 3 receivers go bad. I've had DirecTV for 8 years and I still have the original receiver!

When it screws up you just re-boot it and it fixes itself. We get a lot of summer storms here and the DirecTV seems to handle that better too.

I think it's more expensive but IMO it's worth it.
 
Direct or Dish

Seems that Dish us getting into P***ing contests with the major net works. We have been without CBS for four weeks. Dish was kind enough to get it back on when the lasest Tropical storm was heading our way. When it disapated so did CBS
 
Direct TV for 12 years, never an issue. Had an problem a couple days ago, after 3 minutes on the phone with the tech, it was identified as "user error" I felt really stupid when my wife said "Oh...hit this button". The tech was extremely pleasant and patient with me. :redface:
 
Have had Direct TV for 11 years. Get the Service Package. Had a lightning strike on my home and they literally replaced everything All set top boxes, Dish, Out side wall box, and every cable end connector. Once in a while lose service in hard rainstorm. Price is slightly better than cable.
