I thinking about getting a benchtop disc sander for sanding blanks for segmented pens. Never having owned a disc or belt sander before, which is more useful in pen making? Would a combination disc/belt sander be more useful? Of would just getting a disc sander be good enough?

I have a combo belt / disk. I havent really used it much but I did use both the belt and the disk sander so... I would go for the combo.

Comb-
The belt is a very efficient and inexpensive way to sharpen your tools.
Some use the disc for trueing up the ends of their blanks. My Ryobi does not run true enough.
To me it is not a precision tool but then again My Ryobi combo cost $100.00

I have a combo craftsman. I'd like to use it more, but the disk is not true and it won't stay complete connected to the drive. I use the disk sander to flatten longer pieces out.

Which ever way you go, I recommend buying a good one. You get what you pay for. If I had to do it over, I would get a Jet.

Perhaps I misread your post.
You did say disc bench.I pictured a 4x6 meaning a 4 inch wide belt and a 6 inch disc combination.
For doing segemnted work I 1" belt sand er would be better than a 4" belt.
I don't have one but wished I did.I guess I'll have stick withthe table saw.
