I'm looking at the JET JSG-96 (9 inch disc and 6x48 belt). Anyone have it or have had it? I'm looking to replace my Rikon that has given up the ghost. I'm needing to get something in the next few days due to having multiple projects that have to be completed by the end of the week. This means I need to be able to go buy in person vice having it shipped. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jim in California

Got one a couple hours away. Wife isn't too thrilled with the price. Any suggestions for something good with a smaller price tag?

You can't show her how much this stuff costs!!! JK Do you need that much size? That's a pretty good sized unit - mist of the cheap(er) stuff is bench top. If the primary use is pens, you could get a nice disc sanded and hold out for an edge sander or something later?

Given that the dealer is 2 hours away, search Craigslist in all the areas that you'd be willing to drive to.

I use it for more than pens. Right now, I'm making several display stands for Military Challenge Coins. I've tried to use my hand-held electric sander but I really need to have the stationary belt sander. It works so much better. I also don't want to have to spend $150-$200 every couple of years to buy a new sander. This is the only power tool that I have that has given me any problems.

I'll give craigslist a check.

Thanks,

Jim

I use a disk sander a lot and wanted better than the 6" I had, On another forum I was talked into the Harbor Freight 12" Disk sander. I've been happy with it. Got it with a 20%off coupon. It's loud, takes for ever to stop after it is switched off, but I have been very please with the accuracy I have been able to maintain with it. It was about 1/4 what I thought I would have to spend. Just as thought.

Can't recommend the Grizzly 12". Bought it used, and have had all kinds of problems. Tracking on the belt is a BEAR to adjust. However, if you can swing it, buy one with a 12" disc. Then go to shopsmith.com and buy their disc sanding conversion kit. You will get a self-adhesive hook (Velcro) sheet to put on your disc and assorted "loop" sanding sheets to pop on or off. Wonderful! Don't know any other supplier for these. Russ

Try building one! I found the plans for one in ShopNotes magazine and now have a 6" X 89" edge sander for roughing work, a 2 " X 36" belt sander for finer stuff and a 12" disk sander for everthing. The 6" X 89" does take up alot of floor space but it is well worth it! They also have a plan for a drum sander that I built and increased it to 36" wide. It flattens panels and boards in seconds.

Well, I was able to get the disc part of my Rikon sander working. The belt part still doesn't work. It won't even run if a belt is on it. So, I decided to take the belt off and use it as a disc sander. I went to the orange home improvement store and bought a Ryobi disc/belt sander. I figured that even if it doesn't work that well, I could always take it back. Got it home and set it up. So far, it works great. It's quieter than the Rikon. Hopefully it still works this good after a few months of hard work. Now I can get the other projects done.
