I have been working on my lacquer dipping finish for awhile now and pretty happy with the results however I have some kits set up to turn that require a tenon for the center band and I got to thinking how am I going to dip these? should I just dip as normal and then remount the blank and return the tenon? or should I not turn the tenon at all until after I dip the blank? my concern would be chipping of the finish. does anyone have any suggestions or tricks to get around this?

It all depends on what timber you are using and are you using the lathe to drill but l would do all the lacquer dipping first then let the finish set up hard,a few days maybe what ever it takes then protect the blank using masking tape, the tap they use in auto shops, l use the lathe when cutting the tenon l also use a bullet drill too cut the tenon! first l place a wooden dowel into the brass tube make it a tight fit, the dowel also helps get a center point and doing this will also stop the drill bit from running off center, after cutting the tenon, leave the tape on to protect your finish while you touch up the tenon with thin ca glue.
