Have some of you tried dip staining your blanks? If you have what do you think of the results.

I did it once with a cheap blank I used a water based pickling followed by a water based stain applied after turning. Then I just went ahead with shellawax. I'd post a picture but on of my kids or grand kids must have liked it and it went bye-bye.

I've dyed some maple blanks, after turning, with TransTint Black. Wanted to get the black coloration without using Ebony or African Blackwood. Did not use Ebony due to potential cracking, and the African Blackwood because it's in the Dalbergia genus. Also, have used a General Finishes Merlot dye stain. Both top coated with Deft Brushing Lacquer.
The TransTint Black was paired with chrome hardware on some slimlines. I was pleased with the way they came out.
The Merlot was ok, but wasn't quite what I was looking for.
