Phillywood,
Desert Ironwood doesn't grow in NM (too high), esp. not in the Santa Fe/Albuquerque area.
That said, our thoughts & prayers go with your family; hope your mom makes a speedy recovery.
The Albuquerque area has a very nice woodworking/woodturning community. The local woodturners meet the first Sat. of the month at Woodworkers Supply, and the local woodworkers the second Sat. (I may have that backwards, as I am the chauffeur for my kids' activities on Saturdays).
The folks at the Albuquerque Woodcraft store are really nice. They've currently got a drop-in woodturning clinic on Tuesday evenings with an outstanding teacher. I'll be at the March 8 & 22 lessons.
For wood here, Woodcraft has some, and the former Paxton (I think it's Ore-Pac now) on Edith also. I've heard good things about Albuquerque Hardwood Lumber, but haven't managed to get there.
Best,
hdtran
