Desk Set Finish ?

I'm planning a name plaque/business card holder/pen holder for my Sister-in-Law. Nolan is helping me search for a Red Malle Burl cap to do this with. My plan is to make the desk set and matching pen from the same burl.

All that said, I want to leave a natural edge on the holder, and was wondering about a finish for it. I'm going to do either a CA/BLO or Poly on the pen, so I would like to do something to make the holder have a similar look to the pen finish. What would ya'll suggest for accomplishing this?

Spray polyurethan or spray gloss lacquer, both available at Wally world and other "fine" shops.
