I picked up the lathe below a couple of weeks ago, it seems to be in great shape for it's age (1947). I finally have some tools and a few accessories, almost enough to get me started.

The motor that came with it was a 3/4hp 3450rpm, about twice as fast as the original motor. After a bit of searching it seemed a treadmill motor and controller should work well on this lathe. For $30 locally I found an older treadmill with a 6A 2.25hp (peak) motor and a 10A controller. The initial test setup worked great, now I need to finish a control box and permanently mount the pieces. The motor is DC, so I will probably add a reverse switch. I am going to build a single tool rest also, the double is a bit big for my initial projects.

Hopefully updated pics to follow, the one below is from the last owner.

Very cool. I was contemplating that very conversion last night... can you post a pic of the speed controller? I wondered if they were built-in to all of the rest of the stuff on the treadmill, making interfacing a pain, or if they were seperate.

You may want to try to find a way to seal the motor so the dust doesn't destroy it. Please keep us informed as to how this works for you.
