With the way society is today and people being sue happy I was thinking it might be a good idea to get myself a Dash Cam. I was thinking a Christmas gift for myself. My question is does anyone have one and what do you think?? What brand is a good one and what are the do's and dont's What should I look for as far as quality both night and day, recording times, and motion sensor. Will it still be active if truck is turned off??? Thanks in advance.

I don't personally have one, but a year or so ago there was some pretty dramatic footage of a semi jackknifing on I-15 in the middle of Las Vegas captured on a private dash cam that made the local news.

this post won't help you much because I can't remember the name of the camera, but I used to have a small one build for RC cars that I clipped to my visor. The third day I had it I caught an accident right in front of me and was able to show the cop the video on my laptop right on the scene.

It's always in the back of my mind to get anther one setup, especially now that I have teenage drivers.

John; Check on you tube under car crashes. Seems like everyone across the pond has one in there car. Also as CREID said check out a GoPro this is the camera most people use for action shots. Best Buy has a model on sale today for $499 with a $100 gift card included. These cameras can be used for almost any type of video including under water at over 100 feet. Our club members use them for live action digs on land and under water while metal detecting. Jim S

Remember, a dash cam is a double edged sword. Not only does it show the stupidity of other drivers but it WILL BE called into court if you are involved in accident. Were you on the cell phone, was the radio on, were you distracted, crossed the center line, what was your calculated speed, where you impaired, the list goes on.

Be careful what you ask for.

I have been looking into them as well. I am leaning toward the Uniden CAM250. I think it is around $150 at BestBuy. I haven't looked at other sources yet.

My dash cam....

I use my phone as my dash cam for normal driving, mounted in an extra GoPro mount, and I use my GoPro when I am pulling my trailer. I had some maroon cut me off one time pulling my trailer and I had no choice but to hit him, or take out an innocent. Thank "You Know Who" that a good, honest person who saw it all stayed on scene, and told the cop what happened. Since you can't trust that to happen every time, a little forethought helps loads!

About the only thing that might show up about me if it is called into court, would be me swearing at the way people drive anymore....

Last year, my dash cam saved me from a lying careless driver who blamed me for an accident that caused $9400 in damages to my car. After showing the cop the footage, he cited the other driver. After showing the insurance company the footage, my claim was settled in 40 minutes.

I used a Cobra 840, but now I have an Ausdom A261, very good quality.

Here is a review that I wrote with footage of my accident.

This is all good. keep them coming. I think it is just the world we live in today. I would have no problems having them.

Throughout Russia and Europe these things are almost a necessity, there's so much dirty driving being done just for lawsuits, it's crazy. There are some real interesting videos on this subject on you-tube, they're worth watching. I am very surprised that they aren't more in use in the U.S., especially, with all of the lawsuits the Americans are known to file. That statement wasn't meant to be malicious, it's just what we hear and see in the news.

In Russia a lot of them are there to document abuse by the police there.

Walking through BestBuy not too long ago, I saw the perfect 'dash cam'....but I would want it mounted on the roof. It films in a 360* field!

Not sure about the audio if mounted on a roof(wind and such).

I'd rather have a belt-feed mini-gun mounted forward and backward.....sure would make for a more 'polite trip to work'.

I have a GoPro on my Goldwing with all these crazy drivers cutting motorcycles off and then blaming the bike rider so its nice having some evidence to help you out.
I had my headlight broken last summer by a gravel truck with out a cover over the trailer you can see the stones bouncing on the road and the one that hit the headlight can be seen bouncing of the bike.
I showed this to the insurance company and they covered it in full plus they had the License plate number of the trailer I know they went after the company plus turned them in to the police. If anybody out there rides a Goldwing they know those lights are really pricey.

The heck with the lights, how about bouncing off you??? I always try to avoid riding behind trucks especially dump trucks. You know those have been in some rough dirt roads with stones hiding in every crevous

My thoughts exactly.... I haven't ridden a motor cycle in over 50 years, not since I was stationed on Guam back in '61&'62... we wore helmets, but no face shields back then... think bugs in the teeth and some of those suckers were big and hurt... fortunately, my motorcycle back then could hardly be classified as a motorcycle... 50 cc Honda... biggest thing Honda made back then was the 300 Dream cycle and Yamaha made a 250 that was sizeable... I started with a Lambretta and "graduated" up to the Honda.... and the speed limit on Guam then was only 45 mph.

Rocks...oh, don't get me started with those things.
I don't ride anymore, but I've been hit by them on a bike(GSXR750R)....and I thought the dang thing broke my wrist. I've(my car) seen been hit by rocks falling out of the back of a truck that passed me...it was about the size of a golf ball! I left an indention in the window pillar(passenger side) that, if I fixed it would cost in the $1000 range. (non-emergency number called. po-po told me sorry, they don't 'do that' problem)

I digress.....and now need an 'adult beverage' to get this nasty picture out of my mind.

My new truck came with a GoPro mount on the front windshield! I'm not sure I'm all that interested. I guess if I was off-roading in a beautiful place or in a crazy way and I wanted to record it... But commuter traffic?

Never thought of that. Maybe this is a feature that will become all too common in the newer vehicles. With all the warning lights and buzzers they have, I am sure cameras are available too.
