We're still dealing with cleanup from Isaac. A local has posted the availability of a felled Cypress tree. I know a local turner that does bowls and things out of it, but anyone tried it for pens?

My go pick some up... Any thoughts on how long to let it season?

Rob, I have some Cypress knee that I use for pens. It is pretty soft and need stabilized, but it makes a pretty pen. I think what I have is spalted because it is basically the same color as buckeye burl. It has nice figure, but no burl... if this helps.

If you like making pens from maple or pear (without curl, birdseye or anything else) you might like cypress for pens. Could be fun segmenting it with something like walnut (or mahogany). If you want to try embellishing your pens with woodburning, cypress would work.

Fresh cut cypress is a really wet wood. It dries pretty quickly though. I don't use it for pens, but it's great for hollow forms that you want to pierce. Go get some and try it. What have you got to lose?
