I am thinking about casting some items and was wondering how does everyone keep the item they are inserting from sticking out of the blanks after sanding them down. Say you are casting around the cactus and if you turn the blank down and hit the cactus material does that leave a soft spot in the blank.

All of them stick out, that is how it works. You can finish over the material using a CA finish if you want it completely encased.
Or you can over-turn it and then recast it to get a layer of CA over the item.
