I just got some of the broker pens from CSUSA in the last group buy. It calls for a size U drill bit. I am wondering if I can use a 3/8" bit instead? A test fit for the tube in a 3/8" hole seems ok, but I'm not sure if there is enough clearance with the bushing.

Anyone have experience with this pen?

I've turned several of them but have always used the U bit. IIRC, 3/8" is only 0.007" larger, so I would not think there would be a problem.

After, all, what possible logic could there be in designing the kit for a weirdo size like that? Go with the 3/8" (I mean they should have) and keep it simple and logical. Oh, well. Buy the weird bit and shut up. [:p] You'll be contributing to the national economy. [;)]
 
Keep in mind that the difference of .007 (a U is .368" and 3/8 is .375")is total difference. Since you are working with a circle, the distance between the blank and the wall of the tube will be half that or .0035.

If you use an epoxy I don't think you would have any problems with that substitution.

As mentioned, use a thick epoxy or, like Russ Fairfield recommends on his site, Gorilla Snot. The G will expand and, supposedly, center the blank in the hole.
