Just got the outboard back for the shop......I really screwed it up hitting a rock last year. Obviously I need to test drive the freighter canoe before we head north on Sunday, then the boat needs to be loaded on the rack I made. That's going to be the interesting part! Loading the boat is the scariest thing we face before reaching the Beaufort sea.....nervous about hoisting my baby onto the truck is an understatement!!!!!:frown:

Got any pics? I'd like to see your rack that you made. How big is a freighter canoe?

Link to the update I posted when the rack was 95% complete. The canoe is 21'6" long and 53" wide. The hull weighs 250, dry.

I'll take pics of the process today for you guys, I am documenting each step of the trip planning and the trip its self. Public interest in what Gunther and I have planned has been huge! I even got a request to write an article about it for a science and technology web site.

Mission Completed! Not as easy as it should have been and there is no way it weighs the rated 250! I learned alot for next time but it was more than a bit of a pain in the ass!


I have pics of the process but I it got hot, Alaskans dont get a lot of sun and I am having more trouble loosing the winter fat than usual.

Before you load this beast again. Find the furniture sliders (usually cheap at the big box store). Mount the furniture sliders (on a bolt) on your deck mounted rod holders.


Your rack design is perfect, the canoe just needs to slide easily during the loading process.....THEN, NOT SLIDE! I like the whole design.

Once the boat is loaded on the rack, you can remove the sliders or just cam strap it down. DAMHIKT!

A thought :eek:

Make a pivot at the front legs so the rack can be dropped down at an angle if the rear legs are removed. For the rear legs I'd pivot them at the top to allow the bottom to kick out towards the back of the truck. Load the canoe the lift the rack up and use a trailer pin to lock the rear legs in place.

If that makes no sense I can make a quick sketch.

Take it from someone older than you, loose the fat now, because the older you get, the better friend your body makes with your fat.:frown::eek:

Boxerman I used the one off the boat trailer, it proved insufficient for the job. That's why I say it has to be more than the rated weight. Next time around wheels for the stern of the freighter as well! I need to add rollers or go Penmans route. Makes perfect sence actually.

I throw my 400 pound mountain sled around like its a scooter.......that boat is heavy!

Phil no trees over the driveway and no trees at all on the Beaufort sea. Dont forget I and a 5 year old have to unload this beast once we get there. The hoist from my boat trailer did get put to use.........it just didnt have enough umpf.
