There is several options, including remote desktop depending on which version of windows it is and VNC (google it) for just about anything. VNC works very well for a lot of things that I've needed to get to remotely.

HOWEVER, when you say "work" laptop, that depends a lot on your work. If you work somewhere with an IT department then they will have specific things to either allow or block these types of connections.

Yeah, talk to your IT guys. Aside from policies that will prevent this, they may have a preferred access method (VNC, LogMeInRescue, etc...)

I suspect that they will say no, however. I sure wouldn't allow an unsecured and unknown machine to access an internal desktop pc.

One thing I've done is set up iPads to access Windows PCs. It's kinda kludgey but can work in an emergency. Like you need a file, you can access your PC to email it to yourself.

Your company may provide a VPN option such as CISCO's Remote Access or they may allow use of tools such as RAdmin, GoToMyPC, or Logmein.
As suggested, check with the IT staff and find out the company policy.

Google Dextra.com.
It is a free service much like gotomypc.com.
You can put both "in and out" on all computers.
I've been using this for years without issue (better than GTMPC, in fact). It logs you into your destop AND you can access any networked computers from your virtual destop. It runs in the background and uses very few resources.

Thanks for the info guys, here is a little more info:

I am my own IT guy. I have windows XP on both machines...basically what I am looking to do is to dial into my work computer, so I can run a point of sale system that exists on that computer. While the POS is linked to another computer, that other computer is running the slave.

At this moment I have no desire to transfer files or anything like this, I just need to log in that machine so I can work on that system.

Thanks again!

Both TeamViewer and LogMeInRescue have free versions that may suit your needs. They're web based and reasonably secure.

Does anyone know of a inexpensive way to remotely access my work computer? In two weeks I am realizing the importance of this

Thanks!!

Do you work for a large company and are you on a mainframe server?? if so I don't think any of the above for-mentioned apps will do you any good, with the exception of VPN if your IT people are smart.

Nope small office, there are 3 computers networked during the day, however only my computer needs to be accessed.

Dan,

XP is already 10 years old. Is there a reason you, especially if you are your own IT department have not upgraded to the simpler and much safer Windows 7? This feature is built into Win 7 and you would need nothing more than the email address of the office machine and you would only need that once.

Win 7 should run on just about any computer that XP will.

My 2 cents.

This is what was on the computers when I purchased my business package. I will eventually be upgrading everything, however not for a while as the business is 2 weeks old and I need to hit my break even and make some profit before I upgrade. So in the mean time this is what I have to work with.

I work in IT for my day job and I can use the remote desktop function to access my computer at work. However, before I can do so, I have to establish a VPN connection through our corporate firewall before the utility will communicate to my work desktop.

If you work for a larger company (or smaller company concerned about security) you'll probably have a similar routine to go through.
