This is a Color Grain blank from PSI, called Tahoe Purple. The finish is Pens Plus. When I put the finish on it, it darkened considerably, almost too much. What causes that? Do I finally need to learn the CA finish? The dark blank is really unattractive to me. The first photo is after final sanding.

Jim this is only a guess but being this is basically walnut oil, shellac and wax. I believe it is the oil that darkens the wood. Oil will darken any wood to an extent. Maybe to get around it beacuse I believe you are using as a polishing product, would be to seal the wood first with denatured or unwaxed shellac or a thin coat of CA and then use Pen plus.

It doesn't do it that bad with SpectraPly, although it does darken it. This is also Pens Plus.

I haven't made anything from that particular material but the older stuff used to darken from the heat of finishing.

Anything made of wood runs the risk of darkening when anything with a liquid is applied to it. I stabilize some woods specifically to minimize the color change from blank to to finished pen, but the stabilization process changes the color of the wood even though it preserves the tone and hue of the wood.

I decided it was too dark and ugly. I turned it off, and will start over with a DiamonCast blank.
