Finally got around to messing with a rifle cart. pen..308 cal.Bought the PSI collet chuck and naturally didn't have the right size collet for holding and drilling the bullet:mad:. Checked on Ebay to see if 800watt had anything, but he doesn't list anything other than large collet sets right now.Now what I need to know is what size metric collet will hold the .308 bullet?I have found a 7-8mm collet listed and think it will probably do,but want to check before buying something else that won't work. Thanks for any help you can give me. pap

7-8 won't work, I don't think. Although mathematically, it should.

7 and 8 mm pen tubes are much smaller than the casing on a .308. Although the tubes are about the size of the "nib" of the casing, perhaps that's where they measure it at .308???

IIRC, I drill those with a half inch collet. But, wait for more answers, don't buy one based on my memory!!!

Bullet size is 7.62mm, so the 7-8mm should work -- I'm not at home now, and can't remember -- will check later if no-one else has replied.

For the casing, also since I don't have one handy, Wikipedia can be your friend......

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.308_Winchester

the main casing is listed as 11.9 mm -- making the 11-12 mm collet a good choice. Again, I can check later when I get home if no-one else replies first.....

I have a 7-8mm collet. No problem with the .308/7.62mm projectile. It might be worth looking for the heavier bullets. They will be a little longer and will be more secure in the collet.

As I see the answers and re-read your question, if you MEAN bullet, it will probably work with 7-8mm. I use the "kit pen nib", so I read your question to mean drilling the casing for the tube and refill.

Thanks everone for your inputs, guess I'll try the mm collet.I'm using a drill chuck in headstock for now,but its hard to get a true runout for drilling nib hole without scarring copper on bullet. pap
