As one who has spent much of life as an environmental engineer and worked at one time with the "tubes and turds" side of the buisness, there are some things better not done with a pen -- including hazmat cleanups.
Civil engineering has a number of specialty areas for both college and practice -- Transportaton, Environmental, Structural, Hydraulic, Materials (also called Geotech) -- I expect that she has an interest or focus.
Congrat for her graduation -- that is a long difficult trip in any technical field and engineering is not an easy path. Be aware that there is likely a genetic predisposition to the field/thought processes.
At this point in here progress she is likely to have or being prepared to take the exams in Fundimental of Engineering -- and if she passes, the designation EIT is an achievement of great note within the engineering fields. Her name and EIT on a pen would be a notable gift. Several years later to be followed by the
PE" or Professional Engineering notation for professional registration/licensing.
