When I bought the nib coupler I didn't realize that it was also threaded for the cap. I could cut it off and go with the origional idea of making my own threads for the cap and barrel but since the threads are there I might as well take a shot at using them.

What I need is the size tap for threading the cap. With that information I can search for the tap to do the job.

Thanks

The thread pitch is metric 0.75 by thread gauge and the male thread major diameter is 11.880 mm so I'm going to guess that it's M12x0.75. I don't have the proper charts so remember that's just a guess.

The cap threads are triple start. Taps and dies are special order items, and therefor expensive. If you search this site you can find past group buys -- the tap/die set was approx $200.

Another option is to not use the coupler, and tap your own threads to accept the Churchhill front section. These threads are M10 x 1, which is a commonly available tap. I just by chance was playing with my new tap/die set and a churchhill kit this morning, and can confirm the M10 x 1 works

This is the spec that was used to buy the taps and dies for the group buy. A coupler from the El Grande (the same threads as the Churchill) was sent to the company who measured the threads and made the taps and dies.

M12.0x0.8Px2.4L triple start tap

Dennis is correct - the section is 10 x 1mm although when I use these I normally chase the threads with a die and they seem to work smoother in a 10 x 1 tapped hole.

Another confirmation of the M10x1mm

If any of you have difficulty finding this, and other more specialised, taps and dies try Victor Machinery.

I have recently bought a series of special thread taps and dies for pen making from them and the quality is excellent, as is their service and pricing.
