my birthday is coming up in two weeks and the LOML ordered me a Jet 10141 today. I've been using a Turncrafter VS for about 8 months, but the bugger keeps shutting off. I've had the VS innards replaced once, but it still kept shutting down. This morning, turning a black walnut bowl, I bust into obscenities when it shut off every 5 minutes, and she took it on herself to order the new lathe.

The fact that I got her an iPod Touch for Christmas (she got me a sweater and an outdoor thermometer) might have had something to do with it!

Looks like you confirmed your good judgement --- make a point to keep her!!! A tool enabling wife is a person to be valued. Good success for your new year with both the lathe and she-who-furnished-it.

I definitely agree. My wife has made more purchases for my workshop than I have I think. She wasn't even that upset when I burnt out the motor in my 9' bandsaw

(Note, do NOT use a 9" tabletop bandsaw to resaw 3" mahogany. Just because it barely fits under the bladeguard does not mean it's a good idea.)
