Got a gift for the shop that makes pen making more enjoyable - a new radio and speakers. Sure sounds good.

I have to say I was never one who could listen to music while I worked. It was a distraction. I always like to concentrate on what the task is at hand. One slip and it could mean disaster. Even on the job site I was not a big fan. Some jobs they do not allow radios at all and you now see so many people walking around with ear plugs in your ears. On a construction site I just think it is dangerous. Now this is just me and i probably am an old fart but walking and chewing gum for me is difficult:biggrin:

Enjoy the music and maybe make some wood stands for them or a beautiful shelf with some fancy scroll work. Jazz it up some (pun intended)

John T's comment are understood and I don't disagree. I usually listen to Light Classical music and it is not distracting, but rather, very relaxing. I don't really hear it, but it is background noise that lets me focus. I, partially work in the shop to relax and enjoy.

I know this has been on the forum before, but - How many others out there listen to music in the shop and what type of music do you listen to?
 
No music in my shop...can't spare the power for it as I only have two 110v circuits for the tiny garage I'm currently using. One is usually powering my shopvac and the other powers whatever else I need. That garage sucks!

You could possibly run an additional line out to the garage ... or go with a photovoltaic setup that would charge a battery and run a small inverter off of that.


A radio requires very little in the way of power, a 200 watt/400 watts peak inverter should be able to handle the load of your average radio, and easily run off of a spare car battery or a lawnmower battery. Set the system up to recharge off of some solar panels and you'll be all set to go!


In fact, if you upscale the solar panels and the inverter to perhaps 800 watts/1600 watts peak, you could probably run lights as well, so you don't have to worry about working in the dark if the power goes out or you trip a breaker!
 
I have music but not actually in my shop. I have an old MP3 player hooked to some computer speakers. I listen to oldies. However, it is in the other part of the basement. When my tools and dust collector are running I can't hear it. When everything is off and I'm doing other things in the shop I can hear it. I like it this way so I am not distracted while running tools but still get the music when everything is quiet.

Congrats on your new 'shop tool'.
 
I have a radio tuned to an "oldies" station. By "oldies", they're playing stuff from the 1980's. Not oldies, IMNSHO. It's not turned up terribly loud and once the dust collector is turned on, impossible to hear. But when the machinery is off, and you're either setting up or cleaning up, I find it helpful.

If you have a library card..you can download and use Hoopla for free: audio books, TV shows, movies, etc.
