It's the burl from the American Smoke Tree, but is only found in Kentucky I believe. If I'm remembering right, it's a root burl that grows in the limestone and has to be removed using dynamite. This is all from memory, which isn't always good, but I think I have it right. I just cut my piece yesterday and will be making my first pen this weekend hopefully.

Not a problem.

It looks like I was wrong on the where. Alabama, but everything else looks right.

Have to agree with all the great comments - great looking pen! Definitely some burl wood I'd like to get my hands on.
