I didn't want to clutter up the penturning forums but I need a Chrome Baron kit (already turned the kit) and something like a Father Sing Pen also in chrome. The Baron will be for a racing/auto enthusiast and prefer Chrome finish. The other pen will be for a relatively petite lady but want something other than one of the many slimlines available. Small hands you know. Just ordering two pens, and perhaps a bushing kit, from vendors kick in normally minimum shipping. Hoping to find a vendor that has a cheaper shipping for real small purchases like this. Yeah I know there is time and other expenses involved........still wonder if anyone has an idea. Hoping for perhaps simple first class in padded envelope or something. I'll probably post in another forum for suggestions for a slightly larger than slimline pen also.

Thanks,

Rick

I think your best bet is to have someone that lives where they can buy what you want and then ship the kits to you. But then they will be out time and transportation to go buy the kits for you. In short, you are just as well off if you go ahead and order what you want and pay the shipping fees.

All of the vendors here can be contacted. Get a hold of one or two and see if they will work with you.

It may depend on what you mean by cheap.

I doubt you are going to get below around $5.00.

I don't think I have ordered from any of the Pen Vendors (a few on these boards) where I thought they were gouging on S&H.

But I do have the Luxury of taking a 15 min drive to Rockler.

Living in Alaska I know when the shipping is a gouge and those who insist on shipping UPS gouge as there is no ground shipping to here in reality. They price it as air and call it ground.

I figure a small flat rate box which includes some insurance and some times get it for a buck or so less.

Go to the vendor forms to find some vendors who give fair treatment. Small orders are more expensive for them, so there is a need to be fair on both sides.

WoodCraft Navigator chrome=12.25, slimline about 6, total about 18

Baron chrome=10.70, slimline about $2, shipping about 8, total about 21.

How much gas and time do you spend going to Woodcraft? Choice is certainly yours, but there is more to it than shipping cost.

FWIW,
Ed

Don't forget sales tax

Well, I decided to give a vendor here a try. Won't name them but decided to try a couple of their kits just to see. Not a Baron but close enough and will give me a chance to turn something new. After ordering a couple of these and 5 of those plus bushings even flat rate priority only added like 10% to the total. :)

Oh well, it's only money. If it wasn't spent on this it would be wasted on things like Motorcycle parts and decent Bourbon (or Rum). I do stay away from both the Motorcycle and machinery after the Bourbon.

Thanks again folks.

Rick
