Check with your regional Husqy or Stihl distributor or industrial supply, and see if they had any that were brought in for service and abandoned. You might could get a good deal that way. Also the regional might have better prices on the new products than the BORG on the same product. I know the regional Husqy here does. Plus they can actually tell you about the use and problems with a particular saw as opposed to the typical BORG emp who may know it takes a chainsaw blade which they may or may not sell in addition to the saw.

As far as I know, Stihls never go on sale and are not available in the BORGs. Hate to say it, but spend the money and get another Stihl and don't look back. I have a Homelite in the garage, come and get it, you can have it. I'll use my Stihl because I know it will work when I need it.

I drove past a pawn shop yesterday and they amount of tools they had outside on tables was drool enducing. If my wife hadn't been with me I would have stopped and loaded up!

I just junked out a Stihl 028 because no repair shop could find a new Carb for it, I bought an 18 in. Echo that seems to be OK so far, but it's a long way from my old Stihl. but I'm getting older so a little lighter saw isn't so bad, plus it has a 5 year warranty.

I have gotten good deals on chainsaws from rental shops. They tend to sell off their equipment after a year or so of rental and they go pretty cheap. I just picked up a stihl MS260 pro on sale from the local hardware store( yes we still have 2 around) for $379. They even threw in a case, extra chain, 6pack of 2 stroke, a gas can and a hat.

Do they have Ace Hardware stores in Texas? Ours around here usually put their Stihl Farmboss (model 290 I think) on sale in October. I've bought 2 of these in the past 15 years and am very satisfied. You could go ahead and get you one and sell some of that nice Mesquite wood to us eastern dwellers who don't have mesquite trees to help pay for itself. I think it's an awesome wood.

Don't know if you have one in your area; but Northern Tool had a saw in their flyer today. Don't remember the brand but it was an 16" saw with an advertised 2 HP. (42cc as I recall) They wanted $119.

Certainly not the quality of a Stihl or a Husky; but might do in a pinch if you don't work it too hard??

well, this is a big tree and it is gonna be hard on any saw. how about husky saws? no one seems to have an opinion on those and i see good deals on those on ebay. are they even close to stihls in quality? i refuse to buy caca but am not a millionare either.

Pawn shops are the worst place to get a chain saw or air powered nailing gun. Guys just use the pawn shops to recover some money out of them after they are completely worn out. Use extreme caution.

On another forum I belong to, one member owns a 1200 acre wooded lot and is a professional woodcutter. He sells lumber, firewood, etc. In other words, his cash register is really chain saws. He doesn't think much of the Huskys. He says that wear out in less than a year while his newest Stihl is 16 years old. I know that is just one opinion but it was plenty convincing for me. When my, fairly new, Homelite went belly-up, I bought a new Stihl 211 with easy start. Great saw.
BTW, do not use gasoline with ethanol in your small engines. Bad news.

That used to be the case, but more and more I find almost brand new tools from people who couldn't pay the rent or get food for the week due to not having any work.

People are also selling off bigtime shop tools on craigslist at unprecedented rates lately. I watched a couple HAAS CNC lathes go for over 1/2 of what they were worth.

I have 2 Husqy's. A 455 Rancher(18"/20" bar), and a 234? 14"Arborist saw. They work like banshee's. Which reminds me I need to go and start them and run them for at least 20 minutes. I haven't used them in a few monthes.

The 455 Rancher I bought new from the regional supply, for about $50 less than list. The 234 I bought on clearance from Lowes at 1/2 price, but had to get a filter and caps as someone had taken those parts off of it.

The nice thing about dealing with the regional supply is I can call them and tell them what I need for blades, replacement bars, replacement tension cover bolts, filters, for less than Lowes or Tractor supply, and they will ship cheaply to me so I don't have to drive to the next county to pick them up.

decided to bite the big one (bullet) and just go for it so got a new stihl MS 260 PRO. the weight diff. between that one and the farm boss (?) i gave my son is about 3 lbs. and that makes a HUGE diff. to my back pain. plus the the decompression valve is great. bought a chain sharpener machine a few years ago and never did figure out how to use it. the ptich, size, angle etc etc was too hard to figure out and i have zero patience anyways and the instruction manual really sukked. gave it to a buddy that runs a tree/lawn service and he said it took him 2 weeks in his free time to figure it out. i need a plug-n-play model.

Oh well, you know what they say...! Boys with their toys...!, and for big jobs you need a bloody big toy, huh?
Is this one big enough?

Cheers
George
