I responded to a Craigslist add for a Delta industrial drill press today. 4 presses on a single table. When talking to the lady, we established that i would need to disassemble it. She told me that it was a business, and that I would have to provide a certificate of insurance in order to come get the thing. In 10 years of buying tools from schools, homes, and businesses, usually needing disassembly, this is the first time I've heard that. Has anyone else run into this int their tool acquiring travels?

Talk with your insurance agent. they may have a better understanding as to why YOU need to have insurance for an Item YOU purchased from a business. Yet for me I am going deaf with alarm bells.

I asked her to repeat herself, then said no thank you. I want no part of that. Just posting out of curiosity.

Just to be clear, this was a used tool that they were no longer using, not an inventory item, if that even makes any difference.

Just contact your insurance company and have a rider attached for that day in the amount the company request. I've done this twice and it only cost a few bucks. The certificate of ins. is to show you have insurance to cover any damages to their property or other equipment you might cause while you are removing the item you purchased.

Actually, this is a reasonable request.

A business is exposed to liability if someone is working injured while working on their property. All they are asking is that provide documentation to show that you carry your own insurance.

The same principle applies when you hire someone to work in your home - if they don't have insurance, they you are liable if they are injured. That's why you always should ask a contractor to show their certificate of insurance.

This is actually happening a lot more for the last couple of years. Law suites have forces companies to require anyone other than employees and visitors to carry insurance and requests proof of insurance. Law suite happy environment we are in right now is hurting everyone.
