Anyone have any experience with portable power packs to recharge cell phone batteries when a wall plug is not available?
Any pros or cons on brands would be appreciated.

Into our Canadian tire store a month or so ago, 12V adaptor to charge the wifes phone $19, 12VDC to 120VAC adaptor $12. Bought the AC adaptor and plug the wifes normal charger into it. Works like a charm.

I assume your talking totally portable. I have one its about 1500 mAh and is roughly the size of my iphone. Gets me about 1 full charge or so (so about doubles the run time) and its great if I'm somewhere where I don't have time to stop and plan on alot of data use.

Everything is a tradeoff... If you have the space for a 3000 mAh or bigger one, the better... They actually have some that will juice up an iPad, but it all comes down to the amount of battery in them.

I guess I need to be more specific. I need something to recharge my cell phone battery while at shows when I'm not close to a plug so I can continue processing credit cards.

I use an Energizer with lithiums...1 full charge and it was about $6 at Big Lots. For that price...buy 2!

Gotta agree with alphageek on monoprice. Great prices and service.

I use a duracell 1800 mAH and my son has the monoprice one. Both work very well.

I have an emerceny crank radio that also charges cell phones (and has a flashlight) Made by ETON and badged "Red Cross". They do several models from small, about 3"x2"x5" to big. Cost... if I rember correctly, about $30. Never used it as a charger, I have no cell phone, so I have no idea how long you need to crank for. May not be what you are looking for.

Manny sounds like you need a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) . You can get them fairly cheap now and you can just plug your car charger into it and charge your phone and when you get back to a plugin you can recharge your UPS.

I was thinking the same as Lorbay.... or one of those portable units that jumpstart dead car batteries. These have plenty of power, and would have enough should you want to add accessory LED lighting to your display or have other power needs in the future.

Monty, that looks ok... But....

Monoprice has an excellent reputation.
You could get 2 from Monoprice for the price of that one.
I don't know that sites reputation, so unless you do....

The only reason I could see going with the one you found is if you need the adapters, but of your phone has a USB cord, then the one I linked to is fine.

If you need the adapters or are familiar with that site, it seems fine.

I picked up 2 Duracell for 15 bucks on Woot a while ago. They work great. But, you gotta be careful with battery items. Some may be cheaper, but how long is the battery gonna last. You may find the cheaper ones, you may only be able to recharge half as many times as the more expensive ones.

Dean,
The one I posted is rated 5000mAh while the one from Monoprice is 3000mAh. Is there that much of a difference?

I didn't catch that... More is better on general. You can charge a bigger device or a smaller one more than once. Go for it.

We use an xpower powerpack with a car charger. It's kinda luggy, but we just keep it packed with the rest of our show gear and charge it up the night before.

Dean,
The one I posted is rated 5000mAh while the one from Monoprice is 3000mAh. Is there that much of a difference?

I'm not electrical engineer, but I would think that the difference is about 2000mAh.

Seriously, there is a forty percent difference which, if I understand it correctly and I may not, that means that the the one battery will last around 40% longer before going dead. (An electrical guy is likely to pop in and give some confusing equation which calculates out that it's less than 40% and how much less.)

I ordered the one from gorillagadgets.com that I posted about earlier, hoping it will give me enough recharge time. I paid through Pay Pal so I feel I do have recourse if delivery goes wrong. After I get it, I'll try to remember to do a review of the recharger.
