Which of the various casting resins would you recommend for a beginner? I would like to try casting "trash blanks"

I looked at the Amazing Casting Resin from Alumalite, but I wasn't able to find out if you could add any kind of colorant. I usually use embossing powder when I do epoxy fills on voids in blanks. Would this work with the white amazing Casting Resin?

Is there another brand that is easy to use? I don't want to have to buy a gallon of the stuff if I decide casting just isn't for me.

Hi Sharon - I think Alumilite clear is what's used for "wasted wood" (WW)casting.

I'm working my way up to WW casting and have made many many castings with Alumilite Clear and have added many different colors both liquid from Alumilite and their powdered colorants.

Happy turning

You can buy smaller amounts. I started with silmar 41 from US Composits. You can get smaller sizes. You can buy locally from many places if you have a Michaels, or Hobby Lobby.

If you are casting single colors, you should be ok. But most people casting trash blanks are putting them under pressure. You may have some problems filling voids if you don't use pressure. If you want to do multiple colors, there is a bit of a learning curve. If you mix the colors too soon, they'll blend. If you wait too long, the resin will set before you can get it all poured.

Hope this helps.

I use a foodsaver vacuum sealer for stabilizers. It doesn't draw as much vacuum as a real vacuum pump, but I have had good results. Would it work for this? It should pull the air bubbles out of the resin. I don't know if it would force the resin into voids or not, though. It works great for speed marinating meats! LOL

I cast PR blanks using polyester resin from Woodnwhimsies.com as their prices are the most reasonable. They also sell PearlEx colors at a price more reasonable than Michaels or Hobby Lobby. I use 3/4" PVC pipe for the single tube molds with #10 corks. For multi color pours you can use paper Dixie cups in the 3oz size from a grocery store. CoastalScents.com also has a great variety of color powders to us for your color pours.
