I have a couple of commercial woodworking mallets that I've had for many years, but I've also wanted a Carver's Mallet style for quite some time. There's a good tutorial on making these in the Bushings & Tubes app, so I decided to give it a try.
I followed the tutorial guide for shaping the head, but I wanted a heftier handle. The handle is just under 1.2" in diameter, and has a good feel in my hand. I also put a thumb rest area at the top end of the handle.
Since it's intended to whack things, I didn't worry about a few tool marks showing. I sanded it at 220 grit & applied teak oil.
I had some 1.5 x 1.75 maple spindles on hand, so I cut one about 13" long and split another to glue up for the head section. Nothing fancy, but I like it.
Here's my finished mallet, progress photos, and my two commercial mallets. I might make some more - one can never have too many mallets.
