I posted this question under another topic but thought this might be the proper place to get an answer. The topic of using plexiglass to finish pens came up and some links were provided to answer those questions. As I was sitting there reading them a thought came to me and that doesn't happen alot. The thought was if plexiglass can be used as a finish, can the PR used to make pen blanks be used as a finish??? There probably is a reason not because I have not seen it as a discussion before. I am sure the experts will be able to answer this right away. probably is a logical answer but being a novice I do not see it. Thanks for the replys in advance.

Jay Pickens used a variation of your idea on a pen. Look for the olivewood and snakeskin in his (jpick22) album. As I recall, Jay turned the olivewood, then cast it in polyester resin, then turned and finished it.

That's exactly what he did. The wood has to be turned thin. The wood + resin has to equal the thickness if just wood alone is used. And, the resin magnifies the wood grain pattern just the same as it does on the rattlesnake blanks. It's a great effect.
Do a good turn daily1

Someone once suggested to someone else on this forum casting in pr to fix where they turned a section too thin. I have thought that if I ever get into casting pr than it would probably make the perfect finish, just a little labor intensive.

John,
From what I gather here, a lot of the discoveries are made by people who ask, can this be done? Whatever you have in mind? Try it. Let(show) people on the forum know(see) what you did and what happened. When I initially joined the forum, I asked if anyone has ever used Gym floor finish on a pen. I have since gained some experience and think it will yellow the finish like epoxy but I won't know until I try it. I thought I was going to be able to get some finish to try but my potential source took a different job. I haven't given up though. Good luck.
