I know lots of us have seen this little shop made pencil marker guage thing around, but darned if I can find the plans on the web anywhere.

OK, it looks simple, and I could probably put something together, but plans streamline that process.... so I'm looking for it...

EDIT IN:
The foot is just that, it allow the device to sit on the table, and allows one to spin the work on the pencil while the "compass" is held in place. If you were not using it, it could just sit there in the same position. You could use a large book and do the same thing, put the pencil in the position and rotate the work... does that make sense?

Yes, I know the picture might be close to the plan... humor me! [:p]

Here's my pic... your assistance is GREATLY appreciated!

((OK Cav, you can weigh in on me now! [:0]))

I don't know what you are planning to mark with it but wouldn't a compass work? Or are you like me, just gotta build "STUFF".:D

What we have to justify everything we want to do now? I thought that is what my wife is for;) just kidding, sorry to pick on ya.

What would you use something like that for?? Might help us figure out where to find some plans although I have to say this seems like a pretty simple device that you could design in your head.

Good point, Randy!! [:p]

Well, a simple version of the answer is to mark lines on a spindle. The more complicated part is that it can't be done on a lathe. I carve basswood. I need to mark an "irregular" shape (mostly cylindrical) with lines around the carving. I have a carving roughly similar to an egg shape. I want to mark lines around the shape to divide the length into 4 or 5 "mostly equal" intervals.

Now I know there are ways to do that, and I will do that until I find the picture/plan of the exact thing I am looking for. I just remember seeing this home-made tool and thinking that I should make one some time... I didn't really need it at the time.

I plan on doing a bunch of these carvings, and this tool would make it a bit easier to lay out the lines I need to carve on.

Mebbe it was one of the Wood magazine email plans? I'm still looking, thanks for your interest!!

OK, thanks. Since this is a tool used for woodcarving, why not visit a woodcarving forum and place your inquirt there??:D

Yep, did that too... I'm trying to cover all bases. I figured most pen turners are wood workers, not just pen turners. So far, no one anywhere has found what I'm looking for!

the search continues...

Would a drafting supply house for draftsmen have something like that? Just a thought that you have probably already thought.[:o)]
