I have been experimenting with different CA BLO combinations, and I notice that I am not able to get the same high intensity gloss when I use a thinner CA, which is easier to apply.

The thicker stuff (actually an undilluted Medium) gives a mottled finish which must be sanded with a coarser grade at the start, but polishes out to a brilliant gloss after MM and white diamond buffing.

The same process with a thinner CA (plus more coats) produces a softer gloss.

Is it me? The product? My imagination?

Galanw,

If all things are equal as far as applied thickness, there should not be a difference as far as gloss goes. I have finished pens with thin CA only, it just takes quite a few more build coats than the Thick I use. It is likely that you are not getting it as deep (thick) as you might think with the thin, and you might be ever so slightly sanding through the finish.

Cheers,

You're probably right. I'll work on my technique with the medium.

Thanks!

I mix my own blend a CA 70% thin 30 Thick ! I seem to like the way it goes on better but thats just me ! But thick or thin if you have it on the same thickness it outa come out the same IMHO ! But Iam new to all this so thats my 2 cents worth [:D]

I've been doing the reverse: 70% thin and 30% medium. I'm going to try it your way.

Thanx
