I've wondered how thick my CA finish is but have never taken the time to measure. Of course everyone's finish thickness will vary depending upon how thick each coat is applied. Personally I apply very thin coats which makes for quicker drying times, a smoother application and less sanding. This test was with eight (8) thin coats applied to three modified slim lines. The before measurement is the diameter of the pen after sanding and ready to finish. The after measurement is the diameter of the completed pen after MM and polish and then the math.

Sample / Before / After / thickness/2 = CA thickness

#1 / .406" / .412" / .006/2 = .003" thick
#2 / .407" / .414" / .007/2 = .0035" thick
#3 /.403" / .410" /.007/2 = .0035" thick

This weekend I hope to do the same with 10 coats, and 12 coats. I'm also going to finish 3 blanks (pieces) each with 8, 10 and 12 coats respectively and run them thru the washing machine 1, 2 and 3 times to determine the durability and appearance. Could be a selling factor at this years shows to have visual proof of how my finish withstands the occasional washing. Of course this doesn't protect the refill at all - DAHIKT - Will update the post with future test results.

Thanks

Hi Lynn, Thanks for sharing that info. I agree that thin is easier to apply without ridges and bumps. I was working on two large orders this past winter and got so consistent with the thin that it took very little sanding to get it totally level for MM.
