I am going to start using ca glue for finishing pens. I am wondering on deeper grain woods such as tulipwood, does ca glue fill the grain without a dent on the feel.

I just did a tulipwood atlas pen and finished in CA... It took about 8 coats of medium CA and after about six coats I hit it lightly with my skew. Then two more coats and MM to 12000. Finish was perfect because the CA is a gap filling glue. It is a tough finish to master and I am still working on it.

On open grain wood like Red Oak when I use them, I apply a coat of BLO then some medium CA on a piece of 600 to 1000 grit paper. The paper removes a small amount of the wood and along with the CA deposits it into the open grain giving a good smooth fill. Let that set, sand to 600 and apply the finish as usual. BE SURE TO USE THE WHITE OR VERY LIGHT GRIT PAPER, THE DARK GRIT LOOKS LIKE CRAP IN YOUR PEN FINISH. DAMHIKT either. This works for me, but as always YMMV.
