Similar questions come up often about one finish over another. I don't understand why one would want to put one finish over another…but there is a lot I don't understand or even try to understand.:big grin:
Personally, I would sand off the WTF and start over with CA.
Here is the reason I want to put CA over WTF. I am helping my neighbor's 14 yr old son make pens for his parents for Christmas. I wanted to try WTF on the pens . This was the first time I have used it and I wasn't happy with the level of gloss. At this time, I do not have buffing wheels, etc. to put a high gloss finish on the WTF. So I guess I will sand the blanks down and put CA on them.
You don't need buffing wheels, you have a spinning lathe. Just hold the abrasive or wax on a cloth and turn on the lathe. All water based finishes take time to fully cure. You need a hard finish to be able to buff it to a high gloss. Most turners now use renaissance wax now and that just needs a buff with a soft cloth. No buffing needed. IF, the finish is smooth and level. Use some abrasives first.
