I am having trouble with my CA finish lifting after the pen is assembled. Notice the fogging on the top half of the nib end. This Tulipwood was fine the night before, and in the morning, the finish had lifted by the nib. I am using CA with a mild accelerator, micromeshing to 12,000. I suspect moisture is the problem, because it happens near the ends only at this point. I have used the microwave on my next blanks to see if this is the problem. I also had a Cocobolo cigar do the same thing. I bought some Denatured Alcohol to wipe the blanks with before finishing. Any and all ideas are welcome.

Did you sand the ends before assembling? Sometimes the finish protrudes longer than the barrel and the pressure during assembly can cause similar failure.

It is also possible that it lifted during removal of the bushing but not yet obvious. To avoid that, apply wax between the bushing and barrel before turning and cutting at the contact point before removing the bushings.

On oily woods, I try to clean it with accelerator before applying CA finish too.

Hope these helps.

Another thing you could try is to put a few drops of thin CA on the end of the blank after milling. This will seal the ends and keep anything from seeping into the blank which could cause a variety of problems.
