I recently inquired into the dyeing possibilities of CA glue by calling upon our friend and colleague, Mr. 'Manney' Steglich  over at Wooden Wonders[http://woodenwonderstx.com/WWBlue/NewGlueWS.html].

His reply is as follows which may be of interest/use to many of you follows:

"I would not recommend trying to color the thin CA. It will most likely harden too fast (I have not been successful trying to do this). I have had some success coloring the thick CA with powdered dyes or Pearlex powders.

I would recommend one of the following:
1. If you want black, use the black rubberized CA.
2. Instead of trying to dye the CA, use whatever you are trying to dye the CA with to fill in the holes. Turn the pods down close to size, then fill the holes with the colored substance and then apply a drop or two of thin CA and let it soak in. Repeat as necessary to fill the hole. Do not try to fill all at one time as the CA may not wick completely through.

Also, [as for pen tubes] I have found it advantageous to paint my tubes close to the color I'm using for a fill. This will eliminate any "brass" showing through any areas that may not get filled."

THANK YOU Manney ...

My inquiry was concerning the many holes in Banksia pods that I am trying to fill completely and to be able to obtain a glossy finish once turned. BTW, IF anyone of you are contemplating working with one of these pods I have found that a complete soaking in thin CA will GREATLY cut back on the red fuzz that will ger all over you and the shop. The danged stuff is like microscopic fiberglass shrapnel. A great vacuum system pulling right at the tool tip is also a fantastic help.:smile:

Get it in your eyes and it is hell to pay my friends ... just ask my jealous neighbor about his two day trip to the hospital when he cut into his pod and did not wear his full face shield. I think he said the two day trip cost his several thousand dollars and five days later his eyes are still red, swollen almost shut, and burning all day long. This so-called copy cat turner neighbor just does not listen to folks that have been around a little bit more than he has. IT ALWAYS COSTS HIM A CHUNK OF MONEY AND TIME TOO! This is usually way more money spent elsewhere than what would have been spent on a decent mask/vacuum system.etc.

Hi Fred, thanks for the information about the CA gule, alos thanks for the info about the Banskia pods, I never knew that it had those fibers, I am glad I read your post so if I ever tur it I will make sure I take precautions. Aloha
