Im turning a Ebony blank from PSI for a friend who is graduating this month. I used the Fangar Finish. I got up to the 2 coats of thick CA (air dry between coats), let it sit over night (ran out of time), then when I went to sand it today with 320 I had 2 spots that did not seem to dry. What could have caused this? Im thinking that the first coat did not dry all the way and as I sanded it must have been wet underneath?

tom, i think your theory must be correct, i've had a similar problem. along these same lines, when people 'air dry', are you letting the lathe spin when drying the coats or just letting it sit?

Just letting it sit. How have you fixed the problem? I put a thin CA coat on before I went to work to see if if would cover the spots.??

tom, the other thing i've found with 'wet spots' is that there's too much CA applied on certain areas of the finish. i've tried dario's suggestion of turning it smooth recently with ok results. i just use a small tool with really light pressure and it seems to take off the wet spots.

the other day i had a strange problem similar to yours where i let the blank spin at 1800 RPM while trying to dry it and when i came back to it about 15 min. later, there were these little bubbles of sorts on the area where it was still wet. really weird. that's when i realized there was too much CA applied to those areas. i think when i'm spreading out the glue i need to swipe the cloth back and forth a few more times to try and distribute it more evenly... don't know if this helps or not... and the CA always seems to build up on the areas of the blank where it's bulbous, if you will. and the areas near the blank always seem to have too little CA... frustrating at times!

Well, the thin coat of CA worked and after completing my finish the Ebony looked like black glass. Assembled the cap (Titanium Baron) couldnt wait to assemble the body. Then I did it, assembled it wrong, reversed the trim rings.[:(!]

So I did what any new turner would do, I tried to remove my mistake. Then after an hour of trying with no results I did the next thing a new turner would do....I salvaged what I could for pen parts....and SMASHED what was left!!!! Felt much better.[}:)]

Oh well, Im off to order more Barons!

AHAHA!!! I've done that. I felt better for about 10 seconds. Then I realized that I needed to get more pens. It made me sad. [V] But I still laughed when I read your post. [:D]
