Russ Fairfield (member here) has an excellent web site (http://588v.sl.pt ) with all types of good info on pen finishes, including CA. He also has some excellent videos. They are a good starting place.
As to buffing compounds, there is no uniform standard AFAIK regarding color. So no, you can not assume that white compound from one source is the same as white from another.
