buffers?

I just made my own three wheel buffing system(got everything from lowes)couple of questions,are the wheels from lowes okay for buffing #2 I see three different compounds in csusa's cat.tripoli,white diamond and carnauba wax,is that the order they are supposed to be used in? I will be buffing c.a. and lacquer mostly,thanks.

Red, White & Wax.... You are correct Bill but if your buffing Lacquer or Ca then I don't know if you really need the wax.

Not sure about the wheels from Lowes others can tell you more but I know that the wheel for the Tripoli has to be stiffer, then the wheel for the white diamond is softer and the wheel for the wax is at least as soft as the one for white diamond it not a little softer. I also use a wheel that has no buffing compound, polishing compound or wax on it as a final buff after the wax has been applied. The order you have them in is correct.

Just an FYI:

Harbor Freight has (or had) 3 wheel buffing kits in 6 inch or 8 inch sizes for $7.99 and $9.99, respectively. These were a stiffer spiral sewn wheel, a loose cotton wheel, and a loose flannel wheel. Looked like a pretty good deal to me.

Oof! Bill, If the pix you just posted in SOYP are any indication, you've either already completely mastered the art of buffing or you don't need to bother! Beautiful![8D]

Hi Bill,
I put together a home made buffer from Lowe's also... used a 5/8" all thread, nuts and washers to fit and their 6 or 8 inch wheels, don't remember which right now... I bought two of their medium and one that was stiffer... mostly because my particular Lowe's only had that combo... two are white and one is yellow... I use the yellow for the wax end and get very good results.. pricing was between HF prices quoted above.

For what it's worth I buy all of my buffing supplies from these people. They are very helpful to talk to on the phone. You only need the tripoli and the white (jewelers rouge).

Thanks to all for the info,Bob the finish on the pens was ca no buffing,I want to try some lacquer finishing,thus the need for buffing,(I think)
