A local auction has a bucket of antler to be auctioned off this Thursday. What would be a good price for me to bid on this? The bucket looks to be a 5 gallon bucket stuffed to the rim of deer antler. I will try to upload a picture later today.

I think antler usually goes for around 12 bucks a pound. I'd probably stop bidding around 40 bucks if it was me. It may weigh a good bit more than 4 pounds, but there will be a lot of it that's challenging to use for pen barrels due to size and curve. You'll be boiling and straightening a good bit of it.

There are other things that you can make from the tips ect. Look at the size and think what you can do with it and if you can sell it. It all depends on your market and what customers want.

:smile: Look at my photos under "plantman". I have several ideas that you can use the smaller antlers or just the tips for. You can also use small sections to make segmented desk sets sold by PSI. Be prepared for the smell of burning flesh when you drill out the blanks!!!. Hope this gives you some ideas. No parts need to go to waste. Jim S

Antler is getting expensive everywhere. Usually at sales like that it will go high. I just keep my eyes open at flea markets and antique shops for bargains. Don't find cheap very often but manage to always have some on hand. For pens, there is a lot of waste, keep that in mind when pricing your work.
