box elder

Driving through a neighborhood in town this afternoon, I seen where last summer someone had cut down a large (36" or so) box elder tree in their yard. The branches were removed, but the entire trunk is lying there and it is pretty twisted and gnarled. I'll bet I could have it for free if I hauled it away. Nearby is another big standing one that is all knobby and has close to a 4' burl at ground level. Maybe I should go introduce myself and get aquainted.

I'd say it's time to make a new friend, and do them a favor by hauling off all that nasty old dead wood for them.[]

Any burls on it? If so, even the tree disposal people will probably thank you for taking those off the tree before they dispose of it. Good luck!

I'd go make a new friend, then put some box elder bowl blanks up for sale on the site!! I've got a deal going with a flat rate box of cherry bowl blanks for $20. I'll trade you, box for box, whaddya say???

Is just plain box elder wood a good enough thing to go after or must it be burls? I didn't see any burls on the down tree, but it is still partially covered by snow.

plain box elder is great, especially if it has the pink in the center of it.

Like Dave said, go check it real good for red/pink because if it has that you have a big winner. I'm working on a Legero now with Flame Box Elder that has curl, red/pink and grain turnin and twistin, cool stuff. A couple of you that bought wood blanks from me a while ago recieved blanks from this same batch.

An update on the box elder. I spoke to the guy who owns the tree and he was very happy to let me have it. He even wanted to provide me with gas & oil for my saw. I cut a few pieces off it and it has a lot of red in it and some spalting in places. I hope to have some pictures soon.
It's far more than I'll ever use and I'd like to sell some, but I don't know what to charge. Is there a price range to go by or is it just a random thing? I'll be fair, but I don't want to under cut anyone else either.

Here are some photos of the box elder. They've been moistened with water except for the one with the chain saw. That one is a fresh cut and the saw has a 20" bar. These are representative pictures and I believe the whole log will look like this.
